Abstract

The purpose of this study was to compare the mental health of children against their parent’s emotional and legal divorce in the city of Tehran. To this end, 120 girl students from Tehran were selected through convenience sampling method. Sixty parents scored above average in the emotional divorce questionnaire and 60 of them were children of divorce. The SCL-90 questionnaire which is a checklist for mental illnesses, was given to both groups. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed by T-test for independent groups. The results of the T-test for independent groups suggested that physical complaints, obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobic anxiety, paranoid thoughts and psychosis between two groups of students whose parents had legalized divorce and those who had emotional divorce did not have any significant difference. While interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety and aggression were significant between the two groups of students. The destructive effects of emotional divorce seem far more than legal divorce. In the meantime, children are exposed to serious mental illness.
