Readiness to Change Mediates Relation between Management Support and Employee Engagement among Indonesian University Acquisition-Lecturers

Abstract


Acquisition in a higher education institution is uncommon but challenging situation, and an investigation about inter-relations between individual and external factors in that situation should be valuable. This study aims to test mediating role of individual readiness to change in the relation between individual perception on management support and employee engagement among university acquisition-lecturers. Forty lecturers in an Indonesian state-owned university (Y) completed three adapted questionnaires of readiness to change, perception on management support, and employee engagement. Those lecturers previously worked at a private university (X) that have been acquitted by university Y. University X has much lower national rank compared with university Y. Results suggested significant correlations between the three variables (r = .67 - .81). Mediation analysis using regression method showed a significant role of individual readiness to change as a mediator in the relation between management support and employee engagement. Our findings explain the mechanism of how high the more positive perception on management support increases engagement among university acquisition-lecturers through individual readiness to change. In addition, how demographic characteristics associated on that mechanism and a more dynamic explanation using qualitative data are discussed.
